“My deep experience in corporate and transactional law with nearly a decade of experience with established technology companies and start-ups in Silicon Valley gives my clients confidence in my ability to navigate the complex new world of law as deals with AI.”
Michael is a Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University, located in the heart of Silicon Valley. In addition to his scholarship and teaching, Michael has substantial legal experience and a long history of business consulting and Expert Witness work in high profile corporate governance cases.
Michael recently represented a Founder of an AI start-up in a Series A investment by a private equity firm. He has served as an Expert Witness in some of the most significant corporate governance cases in the past two decades, including the Wells Fargo fake accounts case and the Merck VIOXX litigation which the New York Times called a potentially “pivotal moment in the corporate governance arena.”
Michael co-authored (with data scientists) an article on racial bias in the use of AI and Machine Learning in medical scheduling that won the “best paper” award from the prestigious Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. Michael is the Co-Editor of a Special Issue of Business and Human Rights Journal on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights. He was a signatory of a Report by Privacy Researchers to Canada’s Privacy Commissioner concerning the “Appropriate Regulation of Artificial Intelligence” and he recently participated in a “Blue Ribbon” Panel on Human Rights Compliance convened by Intel Corporation that included a number of the top tier Silicon Valley companies.
After starting his career at “big law” firms, Michael served as the General Counsel of one of the first publicly-held biotechnology companies located in Cambridge, MA, as well as the General Counsel of Interlaken Capital, Inc. (Formerly Finevest), a private equity firm located in Greenwich, CT focusing on contrarian style, value-oriented investments in middle-market companies.
Before moving to Santa Clara University, Michael served as a tenured faculty member at Rutgers University. He has also held visiting appointments at the University of Notre Dame, Zurich University, and the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
